Chincoteague Island

We recently spent the weekend camping in Chincoteague which is located on Virginia’s Eastern shore.

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge offers a variety of activities including hiking, kayaking, bike riding, fishing, or just spending the day at the beach.

We spent our day at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. We hiked to the lighthouse which was a short 0.25 trail, watched the ponies from a distance, went kayaking and spent some time on the beach.

Unlike Assateague Island, the Chincoteague ponies are fenced off the road but you are still able to view them from the road.

When arriving to the beach, there are two separate areas across from each other. On one side you have the Atlantic Ocean and waves and on the other side you have more shallow, calm water perfect for kayaking.

Outside of the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, there is a small town with souvenir shops, local shops, coffee shops and food trucks. (Souvenir, coffee, and many other local shops to include food trucks )

We stopped by Island Creamery, which serves handmade ice cream. It was delicious! There were crowds of people here to try the ice cream but the line went by fast.

We also made a stop at the Historic District which was on the water and nice place to take a stroll.

We camped at the Chinocoteague Jelly Stone which was conveniently close to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.

We have stayed at Jellystone locations before and the Chincoteague location was different than we have experienced but still nice. Even though this Jellystone does not offer many kid friendly fun activities such as arts and crafts, gem mining, laser/archery tag, and Boo’s Boo’s Bootcamp. Nonetheless it is still a nice place to camp especially if you are not going for the activities.

They offer cabins, glamping tents, rv, and tent spots. We grabbed a primitive tent spot which was right along the marsh with the most beautiful view.

There was a small pool, playground, and jumping pillow. The campground posts a list of all the daily activities.

This Jellystone is also connected to a waterpark called Maui Jacks and you get 50 percent off entry. The price of a ticket is $30 so staying with Jellystone gets you in for $15 a ticket.

I did think entry to Maui Jacks was included with staying at Jellystone because pictures of the waterpark were on the website but totally my mistake for not reading all the details. We did not make it to the waterpark because we spent most of day exploring Chincoteague and we could have only gone maybe 1-2 hours so we felt it wasn’t worth the entry price but it looked awesome!
